How we find your ZIP Code
Your device gives us latitude and longitude, and we match that point against postal code data to find the ZIP Code around you. The answer is the five-digit code. The full ZIP+4 depends on the specific delivery address, so it isn't shown.
ZIP Codes aren't areas drawn on a map. The Postal Service assigns them to delivery routes and addresses. The Census Bureau approximates most codes as areas, called ZIP Code Tabulation Areas, and location lookups use areas like these.
You can also tap any point on the map to get the code there. A typed address returns the code listed for that address in map data.
Why the ZIP Code can be off
- Edges of a ZIP Code. Delivery routes don't follow neat lines, so near a boundary your street may belong to the neighboring code.
- ZIP Codes cross other borders. ZIP Codes frequently cross county, city and town lines, so don't use one to work out your county. Use What county am I in? instead.
- PO boxes and single buildings. Some codes cover only PO boxes, one large building or one organization. They have no area of their own, so the lookup returns the code around them. If you get mail at a PO box, its code can differ from the one where you live.
- No code at all. Parks, lakes and open land often have no ZIP Code, because no mail is delivered there. The box then says no code was found.
- Low accuracy. Indoors, a phone may rely on Wi-Fi, which is accurate to roughly 65–330 ft (20–100 m). That matters only near an edge. A computer without Wi-Fi location can be a few miles (several km) off, enough to land in another ZIP Code.
If the ZIP Code is wrong
- Check the accuracy circle on the map. If it's large, go outdoors and tap Update location.
- Tap your building or the nearest street on the map to look up the code for that point.
- Tap Look up another place and type your street address. A full address gives a more reliable code near boundaries.
- For mail, look up the ZIP+4 of your full street address with the Postal Service's ZIP Code lookup.
Outside the United States, the same box shows the local postal code wherever map data has one.
Frequently asked questions
What ZIP Code am I in right now?
Tap Find my ZIP Code and allow location access. The five-digit code for your current position appears in a few seconds, together with your city and state.
Why does my ZIP Code show a different city?
ZIP Codes follow mail routes, and the city in a postal address is the post office's name for the area. It can differ from the city or town you're actually in.
What is ZIP+4?
ZIP+4 adds four digits that point to a specific delivery segment, such as one side of a block or one building. It depends on the full street address, so we show only the five-digit code; look up ZIP+4 with the Postal Service.
How do I find the ZIP Code of an address?
Tap Or enter an address instead, type the address and pick it if a list appears. You'll get its ZIP Code, city, county and state.
Does it show postal codes outside the US?
Yes, wherever map data has one. ZIP Code is the US name for a postal code, so elsewhere the box shows the local code.
