What City Am I In?
Tap Find my city and allow location access to see what city or town you're in, with its county, state and country. Your coordinates are sent only to look up the name and are not stored by us.

How we find your city
We take your device's coordinates and look up which municipality contains them in public map data. Cities, towns, villages and boroughs all count. So the answer may be a small town rather than the big city next to it, and that's correct.
Outside any city limits, in an unincorporated area, we show the nearest locality name in the map data. That's usually the community name people use for the area. If map data has no name for the spot, the box says no city or town was found.
A typed address or a tapped point on the map works the same way, so you can check a place before you go.
City limits vs. your mailing address
In the US, the city in your postal address is the name of the post office that serves you. It's often a nearby city even when you live outside its limits, and the two mean different things:
- City taxes, city elections and city services follow the city limits.
- Mail follows the postal city, which can cover several towns and unincorporated land.
- Our answer follows your position on the map, so it can disagree with your address on purpose.
Your position can also tip the answer:
| Situation | What you may see | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Near a city line | The neighboring city | The accuracy circle crosses the boundary |
| Phone indoors | The right city, unless a line is close | Wi-Fi is accurate to roughly 65–330 ft (20–100 m) |
| Computer without Wi-Fi | A city a few miles (several km) away | The browser may fall back to your internet connection |
| VPN on a computer | The VPN's city | Network location follows the VPN |
If the city looks wrong
- Check the accuracy circle on the map. If it's large, move outdoors and tap Update location.
- Turn on precise location for your browser in your phone's settings.
- On a computer, turn Wi-Fi on and switch off any VPN.
- Tap the spot where you are on the map to see the name for that point.
- For a legal question, such as which city's taxes apply, ask your county or city clerk with your full address.
Frequently asked questions
What town am I in?
Tap Find my city. The answer includes towns, villages and boroughs, not only large cities, so you'll see the municipality you're actually in.
What city or town am I in if I'm in the countryside?
Outside any city limits, we show the nearest locality name, often the community or township people use for the area.
Why is my city different from my address?
Your postal address uses the post office's city name, which can cover land outside that city's limits. We show the place your coordinates fall in.
Can I check the city of another address?
Yes. Tap Or enter an address instead, or Look up another place after a result, and search for it. You'll see its city, county and state.
Does it work when I'm traveling abroad?
Yes. City and town names come from worldwide map data, in English wherever the data has an English name.
