How we find nearby cities
We search open map data for populated places inside the radius you choose and sort them by straight-line distance from you. The direction, such as N or SE, is the compass bearing from your position to each place, on a 16-point compass.
The radius you pick changes what's listed:
| Radius | What's listed |
|---|---|
| 25 mi, 25 km or 50 km | Cities and towns |
| 50, 100 or 200 mi; 100 or 200 km | Cities only, so the list stays readable |
Villages, hamlets and neighborhoods are always left out. A place whose center is within about 1,000 ft (300 m) of you is skipped, because that's where you are. To name the place you're in, use What city am I in?.
What the list means
- Distance is straight-line. In cities, driving is often 20–40% longer; around lakes or mountains it can be about double. Use the distance calculator for the road distance to any of them.
- Distance is to the center. Each place is one point in map data, usually its center. A large city's edge can start miles before its center.
- City and town labels come from map data and follow local definitions. A large town in one country may be called a city in another.
- Up to 30 places are shown, and the 20 nearest are numbered on the map. Choose a smaller radius to see the closest ones in more detail.
If the list looks wrong
- Check the accuracy of your position. On a computer without GPS, location may come from Wi-Fi or your IP address, which can place you in another city.
- Turn on precise location, move near a window and tap Update location.
- Tap your real location on the map to search from that point, or tap Look up another place and type an address.
- If a town you expected is missing, choose 25 mi. At larger radii only cities are listed, and some small towns are mapped as villages.
- In a remote area with few places nearby, choose a larger radius.

Tap Find cities near me and allow location access. You'll see nearby cities and towns, nearest first, with distance and direction.
