How we find your county
Your device reports where you are as latitude and longitude. We compare that point with county boundaries in public map data and show the county that contains it, along with the state.
The answer covers county equivalents too: parishes in Louisiana, and boroughs and census areas in Alaska. Independent cities such as Baltimore, St. Louis, Carson City and many in Virginia belong to no county. There the city itself is the answer.
Connecticut is a special case. Since 2022 the Census Bureau uses nine planning regions instead of the eight historical counties, so different sources may show either name.
When the county can be wrong
Errors usually come from your position, not from the county line itself.
| Situation | What happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Near a county line | The accuracy circle can cross the line | Zoom in and tap your spot on the map |
| Phone indoors | Wi-Fi position, roughly 65–330 ft (20–100 m) off | Fine unless a county line is close |
| Computer without GPS | Network position can be a few miles (several km) off | Type your address instead |
| VPN on a computer | The browser may use the VPN's location, even in another state | Turn the VPN off or type your address |
| Mailing city in another county | Postal city names ignore county lines | Go by the map position or official records, not the mailing city |
| ZIP Code spans two counties | Common, so a ZIP Code can't settle it | Use the full address or coordinates |
| Only a city name typed | You get one point near the city's center | Add the street and house number |
If the county looks wrong
- Zoom in on the map. If you're close to a county line, either answer is possible.
- Go outdoors or turn on precise location, then tap Update location.
- Tap Look up another place and type the full street address. Official records such as property tax or voter registration are tied to the address, so they have the final word.
- In Connecticut, check whether a form asks for a planning region or one of the old counties.
Frequently asked questions
What county am I in right now?
Tap Find my county and allow location access. The county and state for your current position appear in a few seconds.
How do I find the county of an address?
Tap Or enter an address instead, type the street address and choose it from the results. The county of that address appears in place of yours.
Why doesn't my ZIP Code tell me my county?
ZIP Codes are mail routes, and many of them cross county lines. Your coordinates or full address give a reliable answer; a ZIP Code alone does not.
What if I'm in an independent city?
Some cities, such as Baltimore, St. Louis and many in Virginia, aren't part of any county. There the city itself is the county equivalent.
Does it show counties in other countries?
Only where map data has a county-like division. Names and meaning vary by country, so the result is most useful in the US.
