How we find your address
Your device reports latitude and longitude. We send those coordinates to address and place-name lookups. The address lookup finds the closest address point or street in map data. It returns the address in the local format: house number, street, city, state or region, postal code and country.
The map shows your position and its accuracy circle. Tap anywhere else on the map to get the address of that spot. That helps when you describe a meeting point or check a delivery location.
If the street lookup is busy or finds no street, you'll see the nearest place names instead, such as the city, state and postal code.
How precise is the address?
Two things limit it: the accuracy of your position and how detailed the map data is where you are.
| Situation | What you'll usually get |
|---|---|
| Phone outdoors in a city | Your building or the one next door |
| Indoors or between tall buildings | The right street; the house number may be off |
| Laptop on Wi-Fi | The right block or neighborhood |
| Apartment or office building | The building's street address, usually without a unit number |
| Rural road or new development | The road name, sometimes without a house number |
| Park, beach or highway | The nearest road or a place name |
Map data sometimes estimates house numbers between known points, so a number can be slightly off even when your position is perfect. If the accuracy is worse than about 330 ft (100 m), a note warns that the house number may belong to a neighbor.
The city can differ from the one on your mail, too. The postal city is the post office's name, and it isn't always the town you're in.
If the address is wrong
- Wait a few seconds. The address updates as your position gets more accurate.
- Check the accuracy under the address. If it's more than about 330 ft (100 m), go outdoors or near a window and tap Update location.
- Tap your building on the map to get its address directly.
- If you see only a city and postal code, try again in a few minutes, or tap a nearby street on the map.
- For a delivery or a pickup, send a pin along with the address. See How do I share my location? for the steps.
- In an emergency, tell the dispatcher your GPS coordinates and what you see, such as street names and landmarks. Many phones also send their location automatically during emergency calls.
