What Country Am I In?

Tap Find my country and allow location access to see what country you're in, with the region and nearest city. Coordinates are sent only to look up the country and are not stored by us.

Your browser will ask for permission. Coordinates are sent only to look up the country and are not stored by us.

How we find your country

Your device reports its coordinates, and we look up which country contains that point in public map data. Many websites guess your country from your IP address instead. That guess follows your internet provider or VPN, not you, so it can be wrong while you travel.

On a phone the position comes from GPS, Wi-Fi and cell towers, so roaming and VPNs don't affect the answer. On a computer without GPS, the browser may estimate from the network, and then a VPN can put you in another country.

You'll see the country name, with its flag on most phones, with the region and city below. To check another point, such as a town across a border, tap it on the map or search for it.

Borders, coasts and disputed areas

How far off your position can be depends on how your device finds it:

MethodTypical accuracyCan a VPN change it?
GPS on a phoneAbout 16 ft (5 m) under open skyNo
Wi-Fi positioningRoughly 65–330 ft (20–100 m)No
Cell towersHundreds of yards to a couple of miles (hundreds of meters to a few km)No
IP address, on computers without Wi-Fi locationOften a few miles (several km), sometimes another cityYes
  • Near a land border, the accuracy circle can reach the neighboring country. Check the map before relying on the answer.
  • At sea, you may see the nearest country or none at all. Territorial waters usually reach 12 nautical miles (about 14 mi, 22 km) from the coast.
  • Disputed territories are named the way our map data names them. That may not match local law or your view, and it isn't a statement about sovereignty.
  • Enclaves, such as Baarle on the Belgian–Dutch border, can put a border between two houses on the same street. Zoom in on the map to see it.

If the country looks wrong

  1. Look at the accuracy circle on the map. If it spans miles, the browser isn't using GPS.
  2. On a computer, turn off the VPN and try again, or open this page on your phone.
  3. Turn on location services and precise location, then tap Update location.
  4. Near a border, tap your spot on the map. You can also search for the nearest town to see which side of the line it's on.

Frequently asked questions

What country am I in right now?

Tap Find my country and allow location access. The country and your region appear within a few seconds, with the flag on most phones.

Does a VPN change the result?

Not on phones, which use GPS. On a computer without Wi-Fi location, the browser may fall back to network location, and then a VPN can change the country.

Why does a website think I'm in another country?

Most websites use your IP address, which shows where your internet provider or VPN server is. This page uses your device's position instead.

Does it work at sea or on a plane?

It needs an internet connection to look up the name. On a plane, a phone near a window may get a GPS fix; a laptop on in-flight Wi-Fi can be far off. Far offshore you may see no country at all.

Can I check the country of another place?

Yes. Tap Or enter an address instead and search for a town or address. Once a map is showing, you can also tap any point on it.
